A careful museum fit-out for renewed public areas in Amsterdam.
The experience
The redesign renewed the public areas of the Van Gogh Museum and improved the visitor experience. New facilities, furniture, signage, and audiovisual elements were integrated into the existing museum building, respecting the collection, architecture, and visitor flow.

Our job
Hypsos advised during the design phase and was ultimately responsible for the execution, production, installation, and maintenance of the interior. The museum fit-out was carried out with minimal disruption so that the museum could remain open as much as possible. The challenge lay in renovating a museum that welcomes 5,000 visitors daily, without anyone noticing. The entire atrium was stripped, rebuilt, and completely renovated. The museum shop was refreshed, the group entrance improved, the educational zone and the restaurant redesigned, and the visitor wayfinding optimized. All this while the museum remained fully open and fully operational. Exhibition and art changes continued uninterrupted. How? Through smart rerouting of visitor flows and good planning.
Van Gogh museum facelift with an eye for detail
The Van Gogh Museum wanted to renew the public areas and improve the visitor experience, befitting the museum’s international image. The challenge required a precise balance: more comfort and functionality for visitors, without compromising the museum’s character and architectural value. From the design phase onwards, Hypsos provided input regarding material choices, construction, and feasibility. This was followed by the elaboration, production, installation, and maintenance of the interior design. Display cases, furniture, signage, and audiovisual elements were carefully integrated into the existing spaces. During the realization phase, the focus was on quality, coordination, and minimizing disruption, so that the museum could remain open as much as possible. The result is a renewed museum environment where public facilities, visitor flow, and ambiance come together.
